“Be the change you wish to see in the world” -Mahatma Gandhi
Multiple occurrences have inspired this post. The fact that I can’t turn on the news without seeing another bombing or school shooting scares me. The hatred that people feel and express towards each other discourages me. The sad things I see people go through in my line of work disheartens me.
Living in a world like this is frightening and not easy. Contemplating raising children in this day and age is overwhelming. However, I know that in order to have good there must be bad. We can’t control all of the bad things that happen. We were put on this earth to have choice and accountability. Trying to stop the bad completely would destroy agency. We must look for the collateral beauty that comes with having both good and bad in the world.
If we can’t stop the bad completely then what can we do? We all have contributed one way or another to the bad in the world. We complain and hope for change but are we really doing anything? Are we making an effort to be the good in the world? We can try to be the change we wish to see in all of the bad. A couple of ways we can accomplish a change for the better in the world are:
1. Change Your Heart. In order to change the world for better you have to be better yourself. Genuine change starts from within us. We can start by developing the right perspective towards ourselves, our situations, and how we view others.
2. Make your house a home. Have you ever walked into someones home and gotten an instantly good feeling? There is a reason for that. They have made their home a sanctuary. I place of happiness, worshipping, and uplifting. Having a pure heart and working on your personal surroundings is a good place to start. Improving our standards of living and inviting people in to our hearts and our homes must happen in order for us to try and change this crazy world for the better.
2. By small and simple things. I have noticed that usually it is the small and simple acts of kindness that cause happiness.
Alma 37:6 6 Now ye may suppose that this is foolishness in me; but behold I say unto you, that by small and simple things are great things brought to pass; and small means in many instances doth confound the wise.
For example, I was having a terrible day. Nothing seemed to be going right and I just wanted to be done. I had a conversation with someone that changed my perspective and made me feel so much better about myself. By that one person brightening my day I was able to have a better attitude towards everyone else I came into contact with instead of being a grouch. Therefore, they changed the lives of many different people in a small way. Small acts are significant.
4. Be the Change. Once you have mastered your mind, your home, and how you treat and think of others you will begin to see the change. You will become the change. Living each day like it is a gift and trying to spread love and peace.
I still am working on ‘becoming the change I wish to see in the world.’ It is a difficult process of self healing and internal refining. Despite the fact that it is hard I believe that we can all help change the world.
Drop a way that you have tried to change the world or yourself for the better in the comments. Also, I challenge you to go post one kind comment about someone on their social media with #bethechange and message me when you have done it. I still believe their is good in the world and I would love to see it.
